German province and I therefore was a German subject, if
I wanted to protest against his decision, I could do so
in Hongkong, where we would be brought to. The captain of the "China" to whom I appealed, shrugged his shoulders and stated that he could do nothing.

After those personal enquiries were finished
the marines went down to the rooms, which we had occupied.
We were under no conditions permitted to follow them or go
ourselves. After a short time I saw a marine returning with my overcoat and my handgrip. I tried to talk to the British officer regarding my grip, but could not reach him. To every word we told to the marines, we received the answ- er "Remember Belgium how you pillaged over there" and "Re-
member Miss Cavell". When at last it seemed that I could
reach my grip, and I reached out for it, one marine threw
me back and threatened to fire, if I should not keep quiet.

from the luggage room, hoisted on deck, and transhipped to a amall boat. My far pieces were there, one handgrip missing, and the one containing the valuables, in the hand
of a marine. The officer in the meantime had gone to the captains room and we were left to the mercy of the soldieryl There were altogether 36 persons arrested; 28 Germans, 2 Russians, 2 Rumanians, 2 Turcs and my boy and myself.
The auxiliary cruiser, who had captured us,
Star Liner "Laurentic", stationed at Hongkong.
After transhipping the luggage, I saw that my handgrip was transhipped, the boat came back, to get the prisoners. Between the transhipping of the luggage and the transhipping of the men was an interval of about two hours.
When we arrived on board of the auxiliary
cruiser "Laurentic" I asked at once permission to see the captain of the boat, but was denied the privilege, being told, that at Hongkong I had opportunity to state my case. Enquiring after my handgrip I was told, that every thing would be settled after arriving in Hongkong.
